RESILIENCE AND FUTURE OUTLOOK IN THE PERSONAL NARRATIVES OF UKRAINIANS DISPLACED BY WAR

The article explores the relationship between resilience and the perception of the future in the personal narratives of Ukrainians displaced abroad due to the war. The relevance of the topic lies in the need for a deeper understanding of psychological resources involved in adaptation under conditions of war-related migration. The aim of the study was to examine how the level of resilience is related to optimistic perspectives reflected in the personal narratives of displaced individuals. Data were collected using the Ukrainian adaptation of the CD-RISC-10 resilience scale and a semi-structured narrative interview. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, calculation of Spearman’s correlation coefficient between resilience scores and the future outlook index (evaluated on a five-point scale), as well as qualitative analysis of personal narratives grouped by level of resilience and the content characteristics of future-related statements. The main sample consisted of 60 participants; a subsample of 15 was used for narrative analysis. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between resilience and the future outlook index (r = 0.28; p < 0.05). Additionally, differences in resilience scores were observed between groups with high and low future outlook indices. Qualitative analysis showed that participants with high resilience more often described an active attitude toward life, internal coherence, a sense of control, and belief in positive change. In contrast, personal narratives of participants with low resilience were characterized by anxiety, disorientation, and a lack of temporal perspective. The findings offer deeper insight into the role of resilience and future outlook in migrants’ adaptation and affirm the value of the narrative approach as an effective tool for psychosocial support. Further research may focus on the dynamics of personal narratives in the adaptation process and on the development of narrative-based support programs for individuals displaced by war.
